ArcGIS for Desktop

ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It is used for: creating and using maps; compiling geographic data; analyzing mapped information; sharing and discovering geographic information; using maps and geographic information in a range of applications; and managing geographic information in a database.

ArcGIS for Desktop are a set of programs with a single interface and general principles, but differ in available functionality.

ArcGIS for Desktop, which is licensed under three functionality levels:

  • ArcGIS for Desktop Basic (ArcView),
  • ArcGIS for Desktop Standard (ArcEditor)
  • ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced (ArcInfo).

There are three levels of functionality of ArcGIS for Desktop: Basic, Standard and Advanced (old titles - ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo).

Mapping and exploring of geographic information

Visualization and spatial analysis

Creation of interactive maps based on different sources: data files, geodatabases, Internet resources, GPS

Interactive adjustment of symbols and signatures to create beautiful maps

The use of CAD data and satellite images

Converting of CAD data, dBASE, various raster formats

Creation of reports and charts

Creation and editing of simple objects
Automation of digitization of scanned maps
Multiuser editing, and advanced data management

Creation of a high-quality maps and atlases, ready for printing, using a set of mapping tools for professional map design

Advanced features of data processing

Conversion of data for the format covering

Basic functions

Spatial analysis

ArcGIS for Desktop includes hundreds of tools for spatial analysis. With their help, you can convert your data into source for receiving new information, optimize the solution of many GIS tasks such as:

  • Calculation of density and distance
  • Performing of the statistical analysis
  • Analysis of overlay and proximity

Data management

With support for over 70 file formats, you can easily combine different data for display and further analysis in your project. Tools for creating, organizing and managing spatial, tabular, descriptive information gives you a range of possibilities:

  • Search of geographic information
  • Creation, viewing, and managing of metadata
  • Optimizing geodatabase schemes

Mapping and visualization

Creation of a high-quality cartographic products without using of specialized software for graphic design. In ArcGIS for Desktop you have:

  • An extensive library of symbols
  • Ready-made templates for maps, which are easy to customize for your specific task
  • Collection of additional elements for map design

Advanced editing

ArcGIS for Desktop provides easy and quick creation and editing of data. Large number of additional tools and settings help you to solve specialized tasks, such as simultaneous change of several objects, precise geometric construction, detection and solving conflicts between objects. Support for multiuser editing allows many users to customize workflow inside the organization, provide access to the same data for multiple departments.

Use geocoding for a wide range of tasks - from simple data analysis and processing of client database to optimize the location of real estate planning and ways of business development. After geocoding your address database, you can display all the locations on the map, identify existing relationship and the logic of spatial distribution. Sometimes it can be quite simple just look at the map, or you can use analytical tools of ArcGIS for Desktop.

Cartographic projections

With support for a large number of geographic coordinate systems and projections in ArcGIS for Desktop, you can merge data in your project  from diverse sources. Embedded algorithms of calculation ensure accuracy in displaying and editing of the data calculations, analysis and building maps.

ArcGIS for Desktop provides various options for working with images (raster data). They can act as background (substrate) for thematic vector layers used in spatial analysis, additional display setting of raster data sets  and creation of mosaics are supported.

Data exchange

All the benefits of the cloud platform ArcGIS Online is now available for users of ArcGIS for Desktop. Starting with version 10.0, you can use all the capabilities of ArcGIS Online, without leaving the ArcMap: connect the base maps, find data you need, publish your map for everyone or some  group of users.

The interface is easily customizable to meet your tasks: you can add or remove buttons, menu items, change the placement of windows and toolbars. You can add extra functionality by using add-ons development. In addition, you can create your own desktop GIS applications using ArcGIS Engine, which is part of the EDN subscription.
